PSYCHOTHERAPY AND PSYCHOANALYSIS
The key to a sense of well-being and fulfillment in life is self understanding, a reflected life. Such self understanding is achieved through the process of exploration in the therapeutic relationship. With my attuned engagement and guidance, we examine experiences present and past, explore dreams, and process the therapeutic relationship, in order to understand what the patient's hopes and dreads are, what is needed from the therapeutic relationship to be able to realize what the goals are and and what has been getting in the way, and gain an understanding of what you need from the therapeutic experience in order to develop your talents, realize your ambitions and your ideals in your work life and establish meaningful and fulfilling relationships with others.
DREAM ANALYSIS
One of the "royal roads" to self understanding is dream analysis. From the exploration of our dreams we gain the deepest insights into ourselves and are therefore in the position to reach the most profound understanding of how we are in the world, what we are struggling with, what we yearn for, and what we need in order to find personal meaning in our lives.
CONSULTING
In my consulting practice we address specific life challenges: family, intimate relationship, career, professional advancement friendship, parenting - that you currently are facing and are seeking to gain clarity on or a new perspective. ( see book page ). In individual supervision as well as in small supervision groups for both beginning and seasoned therapists and analysts, you have a chance to discuss your work and receive guidance in order to master psychodynamic theory and practice and help you become an effective confident therapist. Under my guidance and support many a therapist has worked through therapeutic impasses with his or her patient and has developed the competence and confidence to be an effective and successful therapist.
TEACHING
For over 25 years I have also been a teacher at several psychoanalytic training institutes. In 1987, together with a few colleagues, we started our own training program, The Training and Research Institute for Self Psychology, TRISP in New York, devoted to the innovative theories of self psychology and intersubjectivity, ideas that have fundamentally changed psychotherapeutic and psychoanalytic practice. Starting in 2015 I have also provided semester long online seminars and zoom lectures on the topic of self psychology and Intersubjective self psychology to therapists in China in simultaneous translation.
